The actors are game, but it never really rises above the tropey roots it pulls from, instead choosing to switch storytelling gears to simulate subversion.
omg yes thank you for detailing at length how I felt!! the characters felt so thin, especially Anora, and it left me feeling almost uninterested in the characters and really just invested to see how things ended, which is a bit disheartening as far as movies go. we finally got to see a bit of the real Anora and then it just ended!? loved your review!
it's like you pulled the words straight out of my mouth. i kept waiting for it to be the great character study it had the potential to be and everyone else seemed to say it was. but nonetheless it's an enjoyable movie
Finally. Someone who understands my point. I felt like this film said nothing relevant by the end. I felt as lost as the characters trying to find Ivan. I’ll admit I was engaged throughout but it felt like all chase that led nowhere.
I was able to catch the film at a festival as a closing film and my lord I wanted to walk out of the theatre mid-way. You are being humble by appreciating camera work. I didn’t find it entertaining at all. It’s a film trapped in the male gaze but I understand many watched it because of the hype that was created around it which after all is disappointing.
Great review, I agree with everything you said. I recently watched and reviewed it as well and was disappointed which I, like you, attributed in part to the hype surrounding the film which built it up to be so much more than it is.
OMG thank you very much for the review, somebody finally spoke out about these issues! I am really convinced people rooting for Igor's role being the Oscar's material of Best Supporting Actor overhype it too much. You can hardly call this a masterpiece, as if there are no other movies this year.

I didn't find the movie entertaining. Just two characters - Torros and Galina. Every time they spoke or moved, they brought life to the film.

I went in knowing it had screwball elements and not really a deep character study so I found myself pleasantly surprised by the humanism and depth.

You nailed it on "Anora". Of course, I agree with you. I'll be interested to know if you agree with my review, here: https://moviestruck.substack.com/p/anora-2024
